We are thrilled to be working with Semilla and Baho coffee for the second year! This year we chose two exceptional examples of the fantastic work these two companies are doing to further specialty coffee in East Africa -
While much effort was put into tracing coffee back to the growers, Semilla recognized that the crucial link of the mill managers was often overlooked. This realization gave birth to the "Manager's Blend," named in honor of Afrodis Munyangahu, the dedicated manager of the Fugi mill. Afrodis is responsible for virtually everything at the mill: cherry collection, managing producer information and payments, processing, storage, and transportation. It’s an immense undertaking, especially while maintaining consistently high sensory quality. It’s only fitting that this exceptional, small lot—comprising the work of just seven producers, including Afrodis's own coffee and his selection of top producers—bears his name. It's a true testament to the passion and care poured into every step.
Fully traceable lots in an East African producing country are a very rare thing. These lots went all the way to specific hills near the washing stations where to coffees were grown.
This traceability and transparency is a core value of Baho Coffee in Rwanda. By connecting more closely with producers, we're able to ensure we continue to grow with them in the future. It is also hugely inspirational for the producers, not only getting paid premium bucks for their high quality coffee, but the recognition of seeing their name on these coffees.
